Author(s): Josephus, Flavius (37- ca. 100)
Publisher: Grand Rapids, MI: Christian Classics Ethereal Library
Description: Josephus’ works, particularly The Wars of the Jews and An- tiquities of the Jews, are some of the most important histor- ical accounts to come out of the first century AD. The Ro- mano-Jewish historian, as well as describing Jewish history and religion to his Roman audience, also documented the fall of Jerusalem. Josephus’ various accounts contain a de- cidedly pro-Roman slant to the point of distortion, but he nevertheless offers a great deal of accurate, valuable insight into first century Judaism and the background of Early Christianity. Of particular interest to people throughout the ages have been the historian’s references to John the Baptist, Jesus, and Jesus’ brother James in chapters 18 and 20 of Antiquities of the Jews.
